Honduras is a country of about eight million inhabitants, bordered to the west by Guatemala , to the southwest by El Salvador , to the southeast by Nicaragua , to the south by the Pacific Ocean and the north the Gulf of Honduras .

  • Tegucigalpa

Tegucigalpa, the capital city has a little over one million inhabitants, and is a blend of low rise colonial buildings and larger modern buildings. Her historical center includes the Central Park , also known as the Plaza Morazan, San Miguel’s Cathedral built in 1782.

The Presidential Palace, The Basilica of Virgin of Suyapa, La Tigra National Park and the colonial towns of Santa Lucia and Valle de Angeles are good options for one day tours.

The city has a fair hotel network and good restaurants.

  • San Pedro Sula

San Pedro Sula is a thriving city and the commercial hub of the country. It features a good choice of hotels, museums and art galleries, boutiques, shopping centers, historical buildings and typical markets. San Pedro Sula is the gateway to charming Tela , La Ceiba and the Caribbean Sea .

  • Tela

Tela is a coastal town, just 90 km. east of San Pedro Sula , renown by its charming beaches, and some tropical parks like Lancetilla Gardens , Punta Sal National Park and Punta Izopo Wild Life Refuge. The head quarters of the Tela Railroad Company that monopolized the banana plantations used to be here until recently. Today Tela boasts excellent accommodations and a good tourist infrastructure for short or long stays. It can be reached from San Pedro by non stop buses in a little more than one hour.

  • La Ceiba

La Ceiba is a port and the country’s third largest city. It is situated within easy reach of Pico Bonito National Park , Cuero y Salado wild life refuge and Cayos Cochinos Marine Reserve, three important centers of ecotourism. Every year in May this city celebrates its “Carnival” with night long parties, live bands, food and drinks.

  • The Copan Ruins and The Bay Islands

The Copan Ruins and the Bay Islands are also easily reached from San Pedro Sula .

The Copan Ruins are the most remarkable Honduran Indian ruins. Named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Copan is a masterpiece of the Mayan engineering genius.

They are located just a few kilometers from the Guatemalan border and 160 kilometers from San Pedro Sula . This is definitely a “must see” in a Honduran travel itinerary

The Bay Islands are Hondura’s Caribbean paradise, still unspoiled. They boast splendid beaches of white sand and gloriously warm, pristine water, with easy going and welcoming people.

These islands are the perfect choice for a relaxing vacation, or for a honey moon or special occasion celebration.

Roatan is the largest and most developed of the Bay Islands , with charming hotels, and luxury villas and apartments at affordable prices. Scuba diving and snorkeling here are a delight.
