There are vestiges of human settlement dating to the Roman occupation of the peninsula, as well as early naval activity in the area.
The region was historically unspared from frequent pirate and military assaults along the coast, with a number of naval battles occurring off the coast. Most notably, in 1544, a squadron of ships under D. Pedro da Cunha, battled the Turkish barbary coast pirate, Xarramet.
Tourism gradually became the economic base of the area, with many new hotels, apartment complexes, shops, roads, and significant improvements to infrastructures completed to attract visitors to the metropolis.
Praia do Carvoeiro is next to a cliff on which harmoniously stand small white fishermen’s houses, Carvoeiro Beach is an attractive and picturesque landmark of the Algarve.
Its limited extent of sand is highly popular with bathers who take up positions next to fishing vessels that are available for excursions out along the coast exploring the wonderful nearby grottoes and caverns.
Right by the beach, there is a broad range of restaurants, bars and terraces providing the link between the sands and the lively town of Carvoeiro.
